Which one fits you

Grimpa

Grimpa is the better pick if

  • you want the famous climbs of Europe, like Mont Ventoux, Alpe d'Huez, the Stelvio and Sa Calobra, each in its own landscape
  • you want to ride your own roads, built from a GPX
  • you'd rather not race, but like meeting someone on the road
  • you train with Watt4, or want nothing to install

MyWhoosh is the better pick if

  • you want to race, even for prize money
  • you ride on an iPhone, an iPad or an Apple TV
  • you want virtual gears: MyWhoosh's MyShift has 30
  • you also row, or train for triathlon

Two free apps, two ideas

MyWhoosh is free to play, from its Abu Dhabi base, with optional paid extras: a Premium Season Pass, and a subscription that gives more room for your own workouts and plans. It is built around racing: the Sunday Race Club, races with cash prizes, and the UCI Cycling Esports World Championships, which it hosts from 2024 to 2026.

Grimpa is free. It is built around the road: famous climbs and flat loops drawn from the real road, your own routes from a GPX, and no races or leaderboards at all.

Where you ride

MyWhoosh has 14 worlds and 104 routes, many set in real places, from France and Belgium to Japan, California and Abu Dhabi, with climbs such as the Galibier and Hautacam, and a fictional world of its own.

Grimpa has fewer roads, each built from the real one: official elevation for every gradient, aerial photos and open map data for the forests, fields and villages. Mont Ventoux from Bédoin, Alpe d'Huez's 21 hairpins, the Stelvio's 48, Sa Calobra, the Flemish Ardennes and the cobbles of the Arenberg. And any road you upload as a GPX, built the same way in about a minute.

Company without racing

MyWhoosh has group rides, teams and team events, and racing at every level. Grimpa has no races, on purpose: riders on the same route at the same moment pass you on the road, and you can sit on their wheel, but nobody ranks you. Your rivals are your own ghosts and a pacer bot at the W/kg you choose.

Training and devices

Both have a workout library and training plans; MyWhoosh adds a custom workout creator and plan builder. Grimpa's sessions run in ERG on any road, and Watt4, the coach that makes Grimpa, opens each day's session in it with one click.

MyWhoosh has apps for Windows, Mac, iPhone, iPad, Android and Apple TV, and virtual gears. Grimpa runs in Chrome or Edge on a computer or Android, with nothing to install; not on iPhone or iPad yet, and you shift on your bike's own gears.

Questions

Is MyWhoosh really free?

Yes: MyWhoosh says it is free to play, with no membership fee. Optional extras cost money: a Premium Season Pass and a subscription for more custom workouts and plans.

Is Grimpa free?

Riding Grimpa is free, with no subscription.

Can I ride my own GPX route?

In Grimpa, yes: upload a GPX and it's built into a world of its own in about a minute, up to 150 km. We found no GPX route import in MyWhoosh's help pages.

Can I race in Grimpa?

No, on purpose. Other riders on the same route pass you on the road and you can draft them, but there are no races or leaderboards. If racing is what you want, MyWhoosh has plenty, for prize money too.

Which devices does Grimpa run on?

Chrome or Edge on Windows, Mac, Linux, a Chromebook or Android, with a Bluetooth smart trainer or power meter. Not on iPhone or iPad yet: their browsers have no Bluetooth.
